Les Passerelles Globale Ghana recently held a strategic meeting with the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service to explore avenues of collaboration aimed at improving skills development and promoting French language integration in vocational education. The discussion highlighted key areas such as: Capacity Building: Opportunities to train teachers and instructors in both technical and language-based competencies. Resource Development: Exploring joint initiatives to produce French language and technical learning materials tailored for TVET institutions. Student Empowerment: Creating platforms that expose learners to cross-cultural exchanges and equip them with skills relevant to both local and global markets. Both organizations expressed strong commitment to deepening collaboration and agreed to set up working sessions that will define practical steps for implementation. Lost in Translation – A Frenchman’s Search for Relief in Ghana

Marc is a French-speaking technician from Côte d’Ivoire, living and working in Accra, Ghana.One weekend, he developed a severe toothache. The pain was sharp and constant, and byMonday morning, he knew he needed a dentist urgently.Marc visited several dental clinics in Accra, but there was a problem: he didn’t speak Englishwell, and none of the clinics had French-speaking staff. He tried to explain his symptoms inbroken English and with hand gestures, but the receptionists and doctors misunderstoodhim. He left each clinic more frustrated and in more pain.Finally, a Togolese friend in Accra told him about a French-speaking dentist in Lomé, justacross the border in Togo. Desperate, Marc made the long journey to Lomé, where — at last— he was able to speak freely, be understood, and treated properly.After the ordeal, Marc couldn’t stop thinking: “Why should someone living in Ghana, rightnext to so many French-speaking countries, have to travel to another country just to findsomeone who understands him?”This experience made Marc realize the urgent need for French language access in Ghana —not just for travelers or diplomats, but for everyday people: workers, students, and patientslike him. WASN’T THAT STRESSFUL FOR HIM?

You all know how hard it is when you don’t understand a language? A few months ago I was talking to someone I know, he’s French.  I was talking to him about my toothache and the fact that I should go and see the dentist. Immediately my dear Fabien offered to give me the contact of a French dentist. However, his contact’s office was in the center of town, far from where I live. I thanked him, but I was curious to know why he goes so far away when there are so many dentists around? That’s when he reveals to me that it’s very complicated for him to express himself in English. It’s even almost impossible for him to express himself in English! So for his medical care he goes to a Togolese woman’s medical center or he goes to the French dentist office far away. In short, Fabien has no choice of hospitals to get treatment because of the language barrier. Wasn’t that stressful for him? A few months later I meet Marion full of energy telling me about her organization in Canada and that was like a revelation. Marion and I talked for many hours. Our conversation was very beneficial because Fabien’s story came back to me and I realized how significant the project was, that she described to me. As soon as I got home I started writing a business plan to teach Functional French in medical institutions in order to facilitate communication between medical staff and patients.
